Center for Socially Engaged Design

Entering, Engaging with, and Exiting Communities

Practicing socially engaged design requires direct, intentional engagement of people in communities as expert contributors and co-designers. Ethical and effective community engagement is a complex skill requiring empathy, self-analysis, and humility in communication. Without careful attention to community engagement practices, socially engaged designers can unintentionally damage strong partnerships, disrupt social and political balance, and do harm to the people they are working with.

The Socially Engaged Design Academy (SEDA) online learning blocks help you characterize and identify your relationship to a variety of communities. Our experts can provide insight and advice through individual consultations or team workshops. Follow the links below to all these tools!

Communication

Communication is always difficult. You might be a busy student and your community partners undoubtedly have a lot on their plates. Establishing clear and thoughtful communication through these difficulties, as well as language barriers and cultural differences, is key to creating effective design. Clearly laying out your intent to community partners, members, and experts throughout the process can help you build connections and rapport leading to better design.

Our experts can provide insight and advice through individual consultations or team workshops. They can also review your content and presentation before reports, presentations, and Design Expo. Follow the links below.
