The Center for Socially Engaged Design provides students the necessary space and tools to think more critically about design. Whether you’re currently in a course, working solo, or on a co-curricular team — or you have an idea you’d like to explore, C-SED can help…
Need some guidance — or a new perspective? C-SED offers consultations with a wide range of U-M experts who have deep experience in research, teaching, industry, and community-based work.
If you want to make your socially engaged design part of your coursework, we have several offerings!
You can jump into a design opportunity with our fieldwork immersion course and be prepared for 4-6 weeks of needs assessment. Get credit and expand your knowledge with the Program in Socially-Engaged Design, Program in Global Health Design, and Program in Sustainable Engineering!
Graduate students can explore socially engaged design through the Masters of Design Science Socially Engaged Design tracks or the dual Masters in Engineering Sustainable Systems.
With a variety of internship opportunities, C-SED Summer Studio facilitates the transformation of cutting-edge research into design innovations that have the capacity to change the world.
A facilitated, iterative, interactive experience, a Design Jam walks students and stakeholders through a design process aimed at generating creative ideas around real-world challenges.
SOCIALLY ENGAGED DESIGN ACADEMY (SEDA)
This educational program uses an online learning block model to help students hone specific techniques of socially engaged design from prototyping to working within a new community.
This 5-month interdisciplinary competition gives U-M student teams the room, tools, and opportunity to deep dive into some of the world’s biggest challenges and turn ideas into solutions.
Join us for our next workshop or request one. C-SED offers workshops on a variety of topics throughout the year. We also work with faculty to facilitate workshops tailored to align with coursework or support learning in specific areas. We’re ready to help broaden understanding on everything from community engagement to best practices for eliciting user requirements and specifications.
