Mel Monier (she/they) is a second-year PhD student in the Department of Communication and Media. Their research focuses on new and digital media, and the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and the body in digital spaces.
Mel is a humanities researcher who primarily uses interview-based research methods, working with participants to understand the roles that digital media platforms play in identity formation, community-building, and safety. Mel is especially interested in trans technologies and trans digital experiences and is a member of Oliver Haimson’s (UMich School of Information) research lab.
Holding a BA in and a MA in Media Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies, Black queer feminist praxis is central to Mel’s work. If you have questions about ethically engaging with communities, interviews and focus groups, feel free to reach out!
