Academic
Our academic programs invite students to dive into socially engaged design curriculum, with a wide range of formats and courses to choose from.
Program in Socially Engaged Design
(9-Credit) Developed and managed by C-SED, the Program in Socially Engaged Design (PSED) is an academic program that allows undergraduate engineering students to focus on foundations and methods relevant in socially engaged design.
Finding Genuine Design Opportunities Course + Fieldwork
In this experiential course, students learn the skills of socially engaged design during the winter semester, then spend 6–8 weeks during the spring/summer immersed in a field site working with a community partner to identify potential design opportunities.
Innovation in Action at the University of Michigan is a campus-wide competition giving groups the opportunity, the tools, the people, and the room to take on the world’s biggest challenges.
Through the course of this 5-month experience, you and your team will do a deep dive into a problem space and come out the other side with robust insights about complex issues, and the tools to synthesize that data and turn it into a solution.
View the world. Find a challenge. Create a better way.
Summer Studio
With a variety of internship opportunities, C-SED Summer Studio facilitates the transformation of cutting-edge research into design innovations that have the capacity to change the world.
Design Jams
Design Jams bring together community partners and students from all over campus to co-create creative solutions to urgent problems.

The Socially Engaged Design Academy (SEDA) offers learners the opportunity to hone their socially engaged design skills in asynchronous online learning blocks. With topics ranging from prototyping to social identity to working with a new community, SEDA brings socially engaged design concepts to life.
