If you want to make your socially engaged design part of your coursework, we have several offerings!
You can jump into a design opportunity with our fieldwork immersion course and be prepared for 4-6 weeks of needs assessment. Get credit and expand your knowledge with the Program in Socially-Engaged Design! Learn more about other recommended programs below.
PROGRAM IN socially engaged design
(Undergraduate, 9-Credit) Developed and managed by C-SED, the Program in Socially Engaged Design (PSED) is an academic program that allows undergraduate engineering students to focus on foundations and methods relevant in socially engaged design.
FINDING GENUINE DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES COurse + fieldwork
In this experiential course, students learn the skills of socially engaged design during the winter semester and then spend 6–8 weeks during the spring/summer immersed in a field site working with a community partner to identify potential design opportunities.
OTHER RECOMMENDed u-m academic programs
We also want to highlight other U-M academic programs that could complement socially engaged design training.
GLOBAL HEALTH DESIGN
(9-Credit) Developed by the Global Health Design Initiative (GHDI), the Specialized Study Program in Global Health Design (PGHD) allows undergraduate engineering students to focus their elective courses and upper-level design coursework on the topic of global health.
