Programs

PROGRAM IN socially engaged design

(Undergraduate, 9-Credit) Developed and managed by C-SED, the Program in Socially Engaged Design (PSED) is an academic program that allows undergraduate engineering students to focus on foundations and methods relevant in socially engaged design.

FINDING GENUINE DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES COurse + fieldwork

In this experiential course, students learn the skills of socially engaged design during the winter semester and then spend 6–8 weeks during the spring/summer immersed in a field site working with a community partner to identify potential design opportunities.

For Undergraduates

GLOBAL HEALTH DESIGN

(9-Credit) Developed by the Global Health Design Initiative (GHDI), the Specialized Study Program in Global Health Design (PGHD) allows undergraduate engineering students to focus their elective courses and upper-level design coursework on the topic of global health.

(9-Credit) Managed by the Civil Engineering Department, the Program in Sustainable Engineering (PISE) offers a unique specialization that guides undergraduate engineering students in focused studies on sustainability in engineering design.

ENGINEERING SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS

(MS/MSE) The Engineering Sustainable Systems Dual Degree confers a master of science (M.S.) degree from the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) and a master of science in engineering (M.S.E.) from the College of Engineering (CoE).

The Design Science Program at the University of Michigan engages in the systematic pursuit of design knowledge across all fields. C-SED has pre-identified courses to assist students seeking to build socially engaged design into their program tracks. Socially Engaged Tracks include: Sustainable Design and Systems Evaluation, Global Health, and Socially Engaged Design.
