Workshops
C-SED offers different educational interventions on a variety of topics related to the socially engaged engineering and design, and the integration of sociotechnical content into course curriculum. These sessions focus on the development of skills and tools, highlighting a human(ity)-centered approach to the design of engineering solutions.
We work with faculty to identify learning goals and student needs, and to plan for the facilitation of workshops that are customized to align with coursework or support learning in specific areas. The sessions dive into topics such as the understanding of stakeholders needs, the definition of engineering challenges considering multiple contextual factors, the ideation of responsive solutions to both stakeholders and engineering requirements, and the use of prototyping as a way to test ideas, communicate with stakeholders, and try innovative solutions.
The pedagogical approach aims to provide a framework to conduct socially engaged engineering & design, offering students multiple opportunities to actively try out a set of tools and practices that will support their design decisions and engineering solutions.
IDENTIFYING EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS FOR YOUR COURSE
C-SED team members can work closely with you to understand your mission and course goals and to help you identify the educational sessions that will advance the learning of your students. Whether you are interested in a single session on a specific topic or need to design a custom workshop or series of workshops to help meet your goals, we are available to partner with you and your course.
C-SED has available educational sessions and activities addressing different dimensions of socially engaged engineering and design. These educational sessions are facilitated by trained graduate student facilitators, range from 50 to 80 minutes and can be facilitated in-person or remotely, depending on your course context and needs:
Workshop Topics:
- Introduction to Socially Engaged Design
- Contextual Factors and Professional Responsibilities in Engineering Design
- Power, Privilege, and Identity in Design
- Stakeholder Mapping
- Conducting Design Interviews
- Conducting Design Observations
- Identifying Need Statements
- Problem Definition and “How Might We” Questions
- Identifying User Requirements and Engineering Specifications
- Idea Generation
- Concept Selection
- Prototyping as a Mindset
- Realize Reflection Activity
“I believe that the pedagogical approach of our educational sessions is unique in the sense that it provides students with structured opportunities to learn skills, tools, and practices that are central to socially engaged engineering and design, anchored in evidence based research. The sessions offer opportunities to systematically practice with those tools in the context of real life projects, and reflect on the social and contextual implications of the design and engineering decisions. You will notice that the sessions share a common structure and “flow” that combines the description or relevant knowledge, the application of that knowledge and skills to real scenarios, and the reflection about the social implications of those actions.”
– Claudia Cameratti-Baeza, PhD, Assistant Director of Experiential Learning
